3.3.1 Test conditions.
a. Meter: Radiometer, International Light Model IL1700, Sensor probe SED 033Y filter. All
meters shall be traceable to NIST.
b. Light stick to IL1700 probe distance: 22 ±0.5 mm (0.866 ±0.02 inches)
c. Temperature Stabilization: Light sticks will be placed in a water bath at test temperature 24oC
± 1oC (75.2 ± 2°F) for a minimum of one (1) hour before activation.
d. Activation method: Bend; agitate for ten (10) seconds.
e. Light sticks shall be agitated for ten (10) seconds before each reading.
f. Light sticks shall keep under cover or in darkness; may be exposed to light during movement
to and from light meter.
g. All meter readings shall made in darkness.
h. Temperature tolerances: plus or minus ±1° C (±2o F.)
i. Chemiluminescent lights shall be held in a vertical position when light output measurement is
made. Light stick holder test fixture shall be made of a non-reflective matte finish black
material.
3.4 Individual wrapping. Individual light sticks shall be sealed in light blocking foil wrapping. Foil
wrapping shall be made of composite material having an aluminum layer with thickness of
0.01778mm (0.0007 inches). Foil wrapping shall be color coded and contain operating instructions.
3.5 Foil wrapper leakage. Samples will be tested for foil wrapper leakage by an application of
41.368 kilopascal (6 psi) air pressure inside of the foil wrap while submerged under water. A
steady stream of air bubbles coming from any portion of the foil, except where the foil has been
penetrated by the air supply shall be classified as an airtight foil failure.
3.6 Light Blocking Test. Activate the light stick while it is still inside the foil wrapper and
observe it in a completely darkened room. Foil wrapper shall not transmit light anywhere
through it except the seams.
3.7 Foil wrapping mark. Individual foil wrapping shall be marked with the following information
unless otherwise specified:
1. NSN
2. Product Description
3. Manufacturer's Lot number
4. Expiration date
3.8 Shelf life. Each chemiluminescent light shall have a minimum of 48 months life at the time of
manufacture.
4. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Recovered materials. The Manufacture or Supplier is encouraged to use recovered materials to
the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph 23.403 of the Federal Acquisition
Regulation (FAR).
